Dr. Shulin Chen is a professor of Biological Systems Engineering and the leader of the Bioprocessing and Bioproduct Engineering Laboratory (BBEL) at Washington State University. He received his PhD in Biological and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University in 1991. Dr. Chen’s research experience includes environmental engineering, bioenergy and bioproducts. He currently directs research and development initiatives advancing science and technology on biorefinery, including algal technologies, microbial production of biochemicals and biofuels, anaerobic digestion biotechnology, nature-inspired lignocellulosic biomass processing, and multi-scale modeling of industrial biological systems. Dr. Chen has published over 300 refereed journal papers and co-authored more than 40 patent applications. Dr. Chen’s work on anaerobic digestion centered on feedstock pretreatment, nutrient recovery, and system modeling.
