Managing Challenging Cataracts with the Femosecond Laser While the benefits of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery over conventional phacoemulsification is hotly debated, its role in managing complex cases is better defined. This video-based talk will demonstrate how challenging cases can be handled safely and more easily with the laser compared with conventional phacoemulsification. Pearls for adjusting the femtosecond laser treatment and adapting the surgical technique to achieve consistent successful outcomes will be highlighted. Videos of cases illustrating the limitations of this technology will also be discussed. The spectrum of cataracts covered will include intumescent cataracts, morgagnian cataracts, soft and hard posterior polar cataracts, cataracts in post-keratoplasty eyes, those with compromised corneas and small pupils, brunescent cataracts, and subluxated cataracts.
