Dr Almond graduated from medicine at the
University of Western Ontario and performed his residency in Family Medicine at
the University of Calgary. He had a comprehensive family practice in Thunder
Bay Ontario for 38 years which included emergency medicine for 15 years,
intrapartum obstetrics for 20 years and hospital care for all 38. He taught
students, residents and allied health professionals for 37 years for multiple
universities. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine was founded in 2005 and
Dr Almond was the first program director of the family medicine residency
program and continued in that position for 10 years. He sat on the College of
Family Physicians of Canada's accreditation committee from 2007 until 2016 when
he became the College's Director of Accreditation. He has remained in that
position since then and has overseen the College's participation in CanRAC
(Canadian Residency Accreditation Consortium) to develop and implement conjoint
accreditation standards for all residency programs and postgraduate offices in
Canada. He was also responsible for overseeing the newest Red Book which
outlines the discipline specific standards for family medicine in Canada.
