Prof Calvin CP Pang was awarded a scholarship to the University of Oxford for DPhil in 1978 and post-doctoral fellowship in 1982. He then returned to Hong Kong to join CUHK first in Chemical Pathology and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in 2008 and the S.H. Ho Professor of Visual Sciences in 2010. From 2012 to 2015 he was Chairman of the Department, and since 2012 Director of the Shantou University/CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Center.

Prof Pang’s current research programmes include: (1) WGS, WES, GWAS, gene mapping and mechanism studies on glaucoma, AMD, PCV, CSCR, myopia, uveitis, retinoblastoma, myopia, and thyroid eye disease. (2) Animal models (optic nerve crush, retina degeneration, experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis). (4) Small herbal molecules, green tea catechins and GHRHR antagonists in ocular oxidative stress, inflammation, and degeneration. (5) Children eye diseases and childhood myopia. The concept of health care through children eye care.

Prof Pang serves as academic assessor, reviewer or external examiner of >60 funding and academic institutions worldwide, including the Wellcome Trust (UK), National Eye Institute (USA), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (USA), European Research Council, Ministry of Health (Singapore), National Science Foundation China, Changjiang Scholar Program China, University of Melbourne, National University of Singapore, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Peking University, and University of Hong Kong. Prof Pang received the China State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (2016), Chinese Ophthalmological Society Special Achievement Award (2017), APAO Senior Achievement Award (2018), HK College of Ophthalmologists Honorary Fellow (2021), ARVO Foundation honoree (2021), and APAO Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Award (2022). Prof Pang has contributed >560 publications in SCI journals and 28 book chapters. Google Scholar: Sum of Citations: >29,000. h-index: 82 as of 31st July 2023.
