Professor Hae Ryong Song of Orthopedic Surgery is the appointed chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Guro hospital. He is well known as the godfather of short guys (achondroplasia patients). He is not only outstanding in his academic activity but also plays a prominent role in social groups such as Little People of Korea, Korea Organization for Rare Disease, Neuro fibromatosis Korea and Korea Osteogenesis Imperfecta Association. He settled the systems for the stable separation of mesenchymal stem cells, culture of the cells, and development of optimal scaffold, combination technique with stem cells and scaffold. The final aim is to develop the new biological technique for the fracture healing of the patients with Osteogenesis imperfecta, Neurofibromatosis, Rickets. His new methods are the cutting edge technology leading the tissue engineering field not only in Korea, but also the world. His ongoing study aims at (1) separation of the mesenchymal stem cell from bone marrow blood collected during bone harvest operation for graft. (2) culture of mesenchymal stem cell from bone marrow blood and cord blood supplied by Medi-Post company(co-worker with our team). (3) differentiation of osteogenic cell from mesenchymal stem cell, (4) development of the scaffold with fibrin glue and platelet rich plasma, (5) animal study using bone defect rabbit model with the stem cells, (6) animal study using bone lengthening rabbit model with stem cells, (7) animal study using growth arrest rabbit model with the stem cells. His future endeavor will be the application of Osteo-Pore to the treatment of bone defect in orthopedic field. Osteo-Pore is newly developed scaffold by Professor Teoh in University of Singapore. Prof.Song graduated from Korea University School of Medicine,Seoul and then proceeded to sucessfully complete his residency in orthopedic surgery from Korea University Guro Hospital. He earned his Ph.D. degree in orthopedics surgery from Korea University in 1990, worked as a fellow in Children’s memorial hospital at Northowest Univsesity in Chicago in 1994 and in the Maryland Center for Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction in Maryland University in 1995. He also worked for Gyeong Sang University Hospital as an Assistant Professor from 1993-97, Associate Professor from 1997-99, Chairman of the Orthopedic Department from 1999 till 2004. He is presently a faculty of Korea University College of Medicine from 2004 and is now Chairman of the Guro Hospital Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
