Dr.K.Sampathkumar is heading the department of Nephrology at the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, Madurai, India.

He graduated from Madurai Medical College  where he was the recipient of Gold medals in Pharmacology, Microbiology and Internal Medicine. He received his MD General Medicine Degree from the Prestigious Madras Medical College. Later, he commenced his subspeciality training in Nephrology in the same Institute. He graduated with DM Nephrology in the year 1992 and started his Practise in the City of Madurai in South India.

He started the Maintenance Hemodialysis, CAPD and Renal Transplantation Programmes in the Meenakshi Mission Hospital which is a tertiary care centre catering to half a million population of Southern Districts of the state of Tamil Nadu , India.

His early interest was in the field of CKD where he did pioneering work on the use of low cost Niacin for the control of Phosphorus which is being extensively cited and further studies done around the World corroborated his original findings . He has also published extensively in diverse areas of clinical Nephrology such as renal infections, renal vasculitides, Acute Kidney Injury , renal electrolyte disorders and drug induced renal diseases, to name a few.

He has done pioneering work in the field of Interventional Nephrology in India. He has mentored many young Nephrologists in insertion of Tunneled hemodialysis catheters and  Percutaneous insertion of PD catheters  in the course of  multitude of workshops and training sessions during  the last 15 years . 

 
He was the Secretary of Southern Chapter of Indian Society of Nephrology for two terms , Secretary of Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India for two  terms where he was instrumental in organising Interventional Nephrology Workshops during the Annual events. He is currently in the Scientific committee of Indian Society of Nephrology.
He is the current Indian Representative for the International Society of Nephrology in the Interventional Nephrology division. He is also the Asia Pacific council Member of Dialysis Access Society . He was conferred the Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow and has been awarded the Examinership in the PACES examinations held in India.
 
He has published more than 50 articles consisting of original research, case reports,reviews and book chapters in peer reviewed journals. He is in the editorial board of Indian journal of Peritoneal dialysis . In addition he has been a reviewer for Indian journal of Nephrology, clinical nephrology and American journal of Kidney diseases.
