Dr. Lemasters earned his MD and PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1975. He has a long-standing interest in the role of mitochondrial metabolism in pathobiology, especially in relation to ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, ethanol/drug-induced hepatic injury, organ preservation for transplantation, cancer, and mitochondrial autophagy (mitophagy). His laboratory extensively applies new techniques of quantitative laser scanning confocal, intravital multiphoton, and super-resolution microscopy, as well as Seahorse respirometry, for physiological analysis of mitochondria and other organelles in living cells and the intact tissues of living animals. At the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), he is Director of the Center for Cell Death, Injury & Regeneration (CCDIR) and the MUSC Advanced Cell Imaging Core, the latter a multiuser facility providing MUSC investigators training, assistance and access to confocal/multiphoton/super-resolution microscopes of different configurations and capabilities. Dr. Lemasters has published over 350 papers in peer-reviewed journals, more than 100 book chapters and has edited 4 books.
